Sleuth  (1972)

Proof that when your film stars Lawrence Olivier and Michael Caine, you literally don’t need to hire any other actors.

Despite being over two hours long I didn’t feel the length at all.  This film was just amazing.  I’m guessing most of the credit can be split evenly between the actors and the original play, which must be really damn awesome to do.

Let the Right One In  (2008)

Two subtitled films in a row?  Man, I might as well have just read a book or something.

Having read the book, this movie suffered from Phantom of the Opera syndrome, where I was waiting to see a really disfigured and messed up face and was left totally underwhelmed.

And Jesus, Sweden in the ’80s was a fashion nightmare.  Even compared to the regular ’80s.

Cinema Paradiso  (1988)

I enjoyed this very much considering it was two hours of people speaking Italian.  Mostly because I got to play the “How many really really old films do you recognise” game that I played through Hugo.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid  (1969)

Well this was enjoyable.  I laughed many times, completely trashing my previous record for most times laughed during a western (True Grit, with 2).

Of course it was all down to Paul Newman and Robert Redford.  Any time in history where those two have appeared on screen together it’s cinematic gold.  They only got better as the film went on.

Snow White and the Hunstman  (2012)

Well, it was alright.  Don’t regret seeing it, but wouldn’t watch it again.

Shrek Forever After  (2011)

Definitely the least good of the bunch, but still enjoyable.  I was going to say that it wasn’t very funny but then Puss came into it and Antonio Banderas saved the entire movie.

Men in Black 3  (2012)

Ok, so I’ll start off with my one negative.  This film didn’t have enough Tommy Lee Jones.  I get that it was important to the plot, but still.  I love that man.

Anyway, with that out of the way, Will Smith absolutely dominated this film.  He was so funny, I definitely laughed more than in the first two films combined.

I also enjoyed the story.  Time travel is always a risky area, and sure there was one very obvious twist that was set up, and one moment near the end where they forgot how their own time machine worked, but other than that everything was kept pretty tidy.

Now I’m hoping James or someone will come home soon so I have to see it again.

It’s a Wonderful Life  (1946)

There’s nothing like sitting down in the sweltering May sunshine and watching a heartwarming Christmas movie.  Really.  There’s nothing else like that.

Remember that episode of Friends where Phoebe watched this movie and got depressed?  Well that’s so true.  Seriously.  Never switch this movie off part way through.  The ending is beautiful but man is it depressing getting there.

But casting Jimmy Stewart as George was a great idea.  That must have been the easiest directing job ever.  ”Ok James, you’re playing a very nice guy who is adored by everyone he meets.  So… just be yourself I guess?  You know what, don’t even read the script, it’d just slow you down”

Shrek the Third  (2007)

Ever since this came out I’ve only heard people say it was a disappointment.  But I thought it was great, it had me laughing out loud.  Sure it’s not as good as the first two, but in all honesty how many films are?

Plus it kept up the Shrek tradition of awesome music and hilarious movie references.
